![]() ![]() It must be some of if not THE best artwork I've EVER seen in a comic / graphic novel: What also is breathtaking about this comic is the glorious artwork. ![]() ![]() ![]() Heartbreaking because it is true and while I do see and my heart breaks for all the male victims, looking at where we are today - yes, especially in light of last week's ruling by that joke that calls itself the US Supreme Court - the institutionalized version of marginalization is definitely stacked against women. Here, the groundwork is laid and it was heartbreaking. Why Hera hasn't joined them and what it all has to do with a female baby that is supposed to be left in the wold because her family can't afford another daughter, we'll find out in the subsequent books, I guess. So all except Hera meet in secret and hatch a plan that births the first Amazons. And it's not like they have been treated any better by the male gods of the Olymp.Ĭase in point, when they take their case to Zeus, guess how that goes. The goddesses of the Olymp have had enough of the cruelty against and marginalisation of women that they had to witness throughout history. My god(desse)s! Tales of Terror from the Black Ship is a collection of scary stories set at sea, or involving the sea-faring. It is my fondest wish that after reading this book, you will feel the same. Sticking with the read I was eventually rewarded by becoming both grossed out and properly horrified. I’ve learned my lesson, but I didn’t think Priestly’s Tales of Terror from the Black Ship was going to get me, especially after the mysterious Thackeray’s first tale. ![]() I am not one who boasts a fearlessness when opening a book of scary stories meant for children. –Thank You Chris Priestly for adding another neurosis, and Thank You Carl V. Here I will post reviews of books I have just finished reading and news items and articles of interest. At the urging of a number of friends, I decided to start a blog. I’ve been a book reviewer for a number of years and have posted hundreds of reviews on both Goodreads and LibraryThing. My focus is contemporary literary fiction (especially Canadian fiction) and mysteries. ![]() Schatje’s Shelves is my reading blog devoted primarily to reviews of the books I acquire for my library - a library which has 8,050+ books (print, ebooks, audiobooks) and keeps growing. Now that I'm retired, I have so much more time to read (and to enjoy the library my husband made for me). For 30 years, I was a high school English teacher/teacher-librarian. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() −15% resistance damage to garrison, −15% high command cost, +25 max command power, +25% command power −15% resistance damage to garrison, −15% high command cost −25% cost for political advisor, trade laws, mobilization laws, economy, high command, air chief, army chief, and navy chief +25% Political Power Gain, +10% war support, -25% cost for mobilization laws and military leaders, -25% war goal justification time, +50% AI aggressiveness, -100 AI desire to get alliesġ0% war support, +5% political power gain +5% War Support, +5% Stability, −25% Justify War Goal −50 Acceptance of Democratic Diplomacy, −0.02 Daily Democracy Support, +10% Stability −50 acceptance of Communism diplomacy, −0.01 daily communism support +10% attack and defense in core states.Ġ.05 neutrality drift, +10% war support, +10% army defense on core states −25% cost for high command, air chief, army chief, and navy chief. Interspersed with Sam’s lists, questions and odd bits of mortality facts on notebook paper, his narrative proceeds in short, candid chapters that reveal a boy who, though he’s not ready to die, nevertheless can confront the reality with heartbreaking clarity. With the encouragement of his tutor, he starts to write a bit about himself, then more, until he is using his writing to sort out his death. “If I grow up,” 11-year-old Sam informs readers, “I’m going to be a scientist.” He says “if” because he has acute lymphoblastic leukemia and knows he probably won’t. ![]() ![]() Some of the things I found most interesting were those that I’d never even heard of and that still perplex doctors today, like Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Necrotising Fasciitis. The book describes things I hadn’t even considered and doubted possible, like an operation to prevent someone from blushing! It also gives a feel of what it’s like to work in Medicine and the problems faced by doctors on a day-to-day base. Despite some cases being fairly complex, Gawande writes in a clear way that’s both easy and enjoyable to read. Written by a surgeon, the book explores many interesting and rare cases – perfect for personal statements – and also more social problems, such as “when good doctors go bad”. After looking at recommendations online, however, I found Complications, which I really enjoyed! Initially I panicked, thinking the only thing I would be able to find was a 2000 page medical textbook that would cost a fortune. ![]() ![]() ![]() When faced with the daunting task of “reading around your subject”, I had no idea where to begin. ![]() ![]() ![]() I love finishing a book and feeling like I’m reading something that has an impact that’s not just a good story that made me happy. The ones that tell a wonderful love story but also give you a deeper life lesson without distracting from the story. This book was a novel with a deeper message. So I decided to create another category of information to warn people about the epilogue sneak peeks in the books as well. You end up hanging with a snippet from book 2. I was prepared for the fact that the standalone book isn’t technically standalone as I accidentally read book 2 first, but when I was visiting a new friend she mentioned that she absolutely hates reading a book that’s “standalone”. ![]() For me it’s a direct connection that no longer makes the story standalone and gives it a certain tension. ![]() This might say it’s stand alone but I’m not thinking of that as the epilogue is specifically designed to pull you into book 2 of the series.
